Home Automation and Private Cinema in Brentwood, CA

A 10,000 square foot residence designed around a simple idea: entertainment at this level shouldn't be a room you visit. It should be woven through the way the house is lived in.

The centerpiece is a dedicated private cinema for twenty guests, a 135-inch screen and a 9.4.4 immersive system designed and calibrated to a reference standard. Twenty people, one picture, and sound tuned to this room and no other. It's a screening room in the honest sense of the word: built to show a film the way its makers heard it.

The primary suite carries the quietest version of the same idea. A concealed projector and a screen recessed into its own pocket mean the room shows no trace of a theater until the moment it becomes one, designed for viewing from bed, then vanishing back into the architecture.

Through the residence, large gallery-style displays hang as architectural focal points rather than televisions, and music moves through dozens of zones across the property, wherever the evening goes. Light and shading work as one with the Control4 home automation system, scenes composed for the way each room is used, shades managing daylight, privacy, and comfort automatically, with a control point wherever a decision happens.

One intent across 10,000 square feet: the house performs, and never performs at you.
